Specifically, websites like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Spotify who do not center their model around photos or videos. While the integration into Facebook shouldn’t be a surprise (Facebook owns Instagram), it becomes questionable when some sites incorporate stories. It’s no surprise other social media sites wanted to get in on the action. Over half a billion users view stories daily, so the potential is massive. Instagram allowed the format of disappearing stories to fully blossom, and of course marketers took notice. Within a matter of months, Instagram Stories surpassed Snapchat Stories in popularity. While Snapchat laid the groundwork for stories, it seems Instagram brought the stories into mass popularity. It was regarded as Snapchat’s equivalent to a Facebook status or a timeline update. By today’s standards, this is fairly unremarkable but it confused users upon its release. The intent was to take an image and make it available for anyone to view as long as the person is on your friends list. In 2013 Snapchat would begin the process of rolling out their Stories features. Now, instead of just providing followers with a status update, you can just post a temporary image and let it disappear on its own. Facebook has allowed users to post stories since 2017 and Twitter recently introduced “ Fleets,” their disappearing story feature. Since Instagram made stories exceptionally popular, users have seen them on every social site. The feature was embraced by casual users and marketers alike, so it only seemed natural that other brands would jump on the bandwagon. Within months of its release, Instagram’s stories would become more popular than Snapchat’s stories. Soon after that, Instagram would add Stories into their app, proving the popularity of disappearing media. Most people will remember Snapchat added Stories as a way for users to share an image with all of their contacts in one click. Over the past few years, the trendiest social media feature has been “stories.” These sites also seem to follow trends that integrate familiar features into new and different environments. Every social site has features that make them unique.
